Note from Mom about Merrylynn June 2021
Dearest ICS Friends and Family,
With a heavy heart, I share the untimely death of ICS interpreter extraordinaire and daughter Merrylynn Cowan. A little over a week has passed since Merrylynn’s death, but the pain of her passing still resides within those of us who knew her, respected her talent and dedication to the Deaf, and loved her, despite her stubbornness.
As her mother, I am proud of her dedication and commitment of service to the Deaf and to those who have decided to join the ranks of certified, ASL interpreters. Merrylynn spent countless hours tutoring and mentoring would-be interpreters with patience and maternal guidance, always giving of her time with the hopes that, someday, the Deaf community would be better served by those she taught.
I can attest to Merrylynn’s conviction in aiding many interpreters, even in her last days among us. I watched—no, marveled—at her passion for teaching incoming and upcoming interpreters while she was barely capable of lifting her head off her pillow Teaching others empowered her, bolstering her to live one more day, if only to “be there” for her “students.” To all of the former students and colleagues who have sent their thoughts and best wishes, I thank you. Your kind words are a testament to Merrylynn’s love for all of you.
On a personal note: I have lost a child to cancer. I do my best to remember my daughter before this disease stripped her of so much of who she could be. Merrylynn was—at times—hard to connect with and to hug, but at other times she was gracious and giving. Those are the moments I choose to hold on to.
However you remember Merrylynn, please know that she always tried her best to be professional, supportive, and personal. Merrylynn loved her ICS family and friends, and she carried your love with her until her final breath. Your love and friendship brought meaning to Merrylynn’s life and, for that, I will always be grateful.
With blessings of love,
Janessa
